Zombie Perks Guide - Talent Trees, Costs & Top Picks

Every zombie in Graveyard Keeper 2 has its own five talent trees paid in tech points: node counts, per-tree costs, the perks worth buying first and the dead nodes to skip.

Quick Answer: What Are Zombie Perks?

Every zombie worker has its own five talent trees — Building, Smithing, Farming, Book writing and Anatomy — one per mastery, bought with tech points just like your research. Each tree mixes mastery upgrades (raising that zombie’s mastery by up to +9 total) and zombie perks that speed up specific workstations or buff combat. Across the five trees that is 85 nodes per zombie, and fully skilling one costs thousands of points — so the winning move is not maxing every zombie, it is specialising: give the quarry zombie its tree, give the fighter its combat perks, and leave the rest minimal.

The Five Trees and What They Cost

Each zombie pays its own way — the points do not pool between zombies or with your research. Per-tree totals from the in-game trees:

The Five Trees and What They Cost
TreeNodesPerksMasteryFull Cost
Building1710+94,600 red points
Smithing1710+94,450 red points
Farming1710+94,650 green points
Book writing1912+91,500 red + 835 blue points
Anatomy158+91,500 red + 1,075 blue points
Tech points spent on a zombie’s tree are gone if that zombie dies in battle — keep fighter zombies out of squads you cannot afford to re-skill, or accept the re-investment as a war cost.

The Perks Worth Buying First

Tick-reduction perks are the backbone of zombie economics — most gather speeds go from 8 ticks to 6, which is a flat 25% throughput raise on that station:

The Perks Worth Buying First

Dead Nodes: Perks to Skip

Several zombie perks are honest about being useless — or worse, are traps. Novice Fisherman and Veteran Fisherman have no effect: zombies have no fishing work, so the catch never changes. Dead jeweler similarly does nothing at the Jewelry Table — its 14 recipes turn out identically without it. Novice Musician and Skilled Musician are flavour perks for the church choir (the tooltips admit as much: "at least the rats seem to enjoy it"). Check the effect line before spending points anywhere in the Book writing and Anatomy trees especially — several nodes there only matter for specific writing desk recipes.

Specialisation Strategy

A fresh zombie from the Resurrection Table starts with nothing but its collar’s red-skull perk slots (see the worker zombie deep dive at /zombies/worker-zombie for the resurrection mechanics). The efficient pattern: pick one zombie per production line — a quarry zombie takes Building’s Quarryman plus the mastery upgrades, a farm zombie takes Farming’s Winemaker and Presser line, a writer zombie takes the Book writing tree’s Dead Shakespeare and Ghostwriter. Fighter zombies in the Barracks want the Smithing combat quartet — Impaler or Blindseye depending on pike or bow, then Tin Can and Undead Resilience to survive the Districts Purge waves. Mastery upgrade nodes are the safest filler on any working zombie because +9 mastery accelerates every recipe at that zombie’s station.
